Course resources for this year’s Go Big Read selection

These resources will support instructors in incorporating the 2024-2025 Go Big Read book selection, “Sitting Pretty: The View from My Ordinary Resilient Disabled Body by Rebekah Taussig. To request free copies of the book for your course, please submit this form.

  • Discussion Guide
    This guide helps instructors and reading group facilitators lead meaningful conversations on “Sitting Pretty” and disability. There is a preface on disability and ableism – what is disability, how do we talk about disability, and how do we understand disability in our society? The guide also has sample discussion questions resources to learn more about accessibility at UW–Madison.

    This module includes
    chapter summaries, themes and topics, sample discussion questions and writing prompts, and more, with discipline-specific resources designed for the humanities, social sciences, STEM & medicine, education, and interdisciplinary fields.  
  • Writing Across the Curriculum Guide on Assignment Creation
    This guide describes how to create low- and high-stake assignments related to “Sitting Pretty.” It includes best practices and sample writing prompts that instructors can adopt as-is or use as
     inspiration.

    This guide features primary sources on UW–Madison’s history regarding disability and accessibility as well as discussion questions.
  • Cooperative Children’s Book Center Reading List
    This reading list has book recommendations from children and teens. We encourage all Madison community members to read and engage with these books.
