Campus guidance to instructors on measles

The Division for Teaching & Learning shares the following guidance to instructors in response to a case of measles on campus.

  • Providing flexibility is encouraged: As is the case with any student illness, instructors are encouraged to offer flexibility to complete coursework and assignments if students miss class due to illness or required quarantine. We understand and acknowledge that flexibilities will be specific to each course and instructor and will vary across campus. Please communicate about this with students. Instructors can also contact CTLM directly for assistance.
  • Avoid disruption to in-person instruction: If multiple students in a course section must miss class concurrently due to illness or required quarantine, every effort should be made to avoid a disruption to in-person instruction. Instructors should not immediately cancel class if notified of an exposure. Instructors should work with their department, school and college, as needed.
  • Instructor illness: As is the case for any illness or required quarantine, instructors of in-person courses who are unable to teach in-person due to illness should contact their supervisor or department leadership to discuss and coordinate arrangements that will minimize disruption to their in-person courses. Colleague coverage is a first option to consider.
  • Respect medical privacy: It’s important to respect the medical privacy of those who become sick or are required to quarantine. Informing your class that someone has tested positive may reveal the identity of the student who is sick. Instructors should not do this. If a student wishes to inform the class, they may do so, though they are not required. UHS is directly informing individuals who have been exposed.
  • Refer medical questions to UHS: It’s not instructors’ responsibility to provide medical advice. If a student asks for medical guidance, please direct them to contact UHS at 608-265-5600.
